How Cupping Works
Cupping is a practical way to drain fluids and toxins from various areas of the body, break up adhesions and lift and pull connective tissue, increase blood flow to stagnant muscle tissue and sooth the nervous system. Cupping is done by creating negative pressure inside a small one-to two-inch cup (approximately). When the cup is placed on the skin with suction, it pulls the skin up into the cup, and the negative pressure produces its therapeutic results. Practitioners may use a pump or a flame heat to create the suction.
The History of Cupping
Cupping has a long history and was first practiced in China and then in Egypt. From Egypt, cupping was introduced to the Greeks and eventually Europe, and was even used in America in the late 1800s. In fact, breast cupping for lactation dysfunctions has evolved into the breast pump we are familiar with today. There is an age old tradition of using cupping to improve the physical condition.
Surprising Uses of Cupping
Cupping can be used for fibromyalgia patients, to reduce post-injury scar tissue, for chronic pain and post-surgery adhesions. Cupping is commonly used for bronchitis and asthma. In fact, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, cupping was done regularly in households across the country to treat these conditions, as well as for chest colds and flu.
Furthermore, cupping is used regularly in traditional Chinese medicine for digestive conditions and diarrhea, shoulder pain and frozen shoulder, headaches and migraines, infertility and menstruation problems, colds, acne, insomnia and soft tissue injuries.
Styles of Cupping:
There are two styles of cupping: moving and stationary. To perform moving cupping, oil must be applied to the skin before the cup is placed in order to allow for the cup to slide. Once the cup is placed, the practitioner will glide the cup up or down along the muscle pathway, breaking up adhesions and lengthening tissue by “pulling” it up and along. Stationary cups can be left on the body from 5 – 15 minutes. The stationary cups allow congestion and stagnation to break up and drain through the skin.
Both stationary and moving cupping are an excellent method of draining inflammation from the body by bringing it to the surface so that it can dissipate more readily.
NOTE: Cupping is relatively safe, if done by a trained practitioner, but it may leave dark circles on the surface of the skin as seen on the Olympic athletes in the competitions and even on the red carpet runway on the backs of celebrities. While harmless, these marks can appear quite disturbing. They may take as long a week to clear up
Rosemary is a detox specialist with 25 years of experience beginning with Asian bodywork therapies such as acupressure and shiatsu, she has received certifications in metabolic NAET, lymph massage, colon hydro therapy, to be included in her detox services along with ionic foot bath, and far infra red sauna at Nourishing- Journey.
Acne on your back can affect anyone, not just a teenager. This kind of acne is persistent and difficult to clear up. Now that summer is coming closer and sleeveless shirts are necessary, how do you ignore the back-ne? Infrared sauna can make a big difference.
Most people I talk to don’t understand how different infrared sauna works as compared to other saunas. The infrared sauna causes your body to sweat from a deeper level. This means the sweat you generate is not just a result of your body getting hot and needing to cool off. The light waves from infrared are similar to the wavelengths of the sun. This means you feel great after the sauna, as if you went to the beach for the day and didn’t get sunburned. So many clients use the infrared sauna for stress management and there are studies available showing it is good for your heart as well.
Back to getting good results with conquering back-ne. We have found that doing an infrared sauna session 3 times a week for 4 weeks can help your skin clear up and this also means you have made some headway on reducing your toxin levels–and stress as well. Pretty good for an easy, 30-minute relaxing sauna session!
Benefits of far infrared sauna include:
- Relaxation, well-being
- Pain relief
- Weight release
- Improved circulation
- Skin purification
So, come on in and let’s get started!
As a detox specialist, I am often asked the question, “What do you think of colonics?” In the past my response was, “I am not sure,” or “An enema should be good enough.” Today, however, my response is much different as I have seen first-hand the benefits of colon hydrotherapy that one can NOT get from doing enemas alone. But, even after someone becomes educated about the benefits, there are obstacles to committing to make the first step. First I want to address the “yuk” factor. Most people want to be private about their own bowel movements! I, in particular, like to be private, so I understand this concern. Another factor is anxiety; almost every new client who comes feels a bit self-conscious. The colon hydrotherapy experience is unfamiliar. This usually goes away after the first 5 minutes into the session, which lasts about 35 minutes. Let’s face it- it feels good to poop! So 35 minutes to fully eliminate waste matter really makes for a refreshing experience. So many people feel lighter and energized after receiving a colon hydrotherapy session. At Nourishing Journey we have couples come in, women preparing for their weddings, or people who just want to feel better and try it out. I don’t want to forget to mention the folks who need help being regular or who are dealing with digestive issues like leaky gut syndrome or bloating.
What I have come to understand about the colon is it is like an accordion–as in polka music. This may help you to imagine how something about 5 ft. long could fit into a 100 lb. adult–the design is brilliant! The small folds of the colon act like pockets, where healthy and unhealthy microbes can gather and populate. Meanwhile, as the stomach muscles play the accordion the stool and fiber pass through the center of the colon. Daily waste, aided by the folds contracting and expanding and sometimes tooting, is passed down to the end of the tube to be eliminated. So, can you see how old waste might linger in the folds and make friends with the microbes in the pockets? When the water from a colonic comes in, it swooshes around these pockets to flush out what the passing fiber in the colon doesn’t reach. This is a simplified description but I hope it helps you understand why irrigation of the colon is sooo beneficial, and while doing an enema is good for home care, it is not meant to replace colon hydrotherapy. By the way, for those of you who are squeamish about doing an enema, just come in for a colonic and you will get a deluxe treatment and leave the office lighter and refreshed-it’s easy!
Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy:
- Improves the effectiveness of the digestive process
- Maintains regularity and prevent constipation
- Increase energy
- Help maintain PH levels
- Increase absorption of vitamins and minerals
- Improves whole-body well-being
- Rehydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
- Release toxins
- Improve skin
Have you ever used clay to detox? Dr. Mark Sircus discusses how to use clay to reduce toxicity in the body. Clay can be used internally as a supplement to absorb toxins or externally to pull them out through your skin. At Nourishing Journey, I am always suggesting the use of clay to my clients.
When used externally, it softens the skin and pulls toxins out of the body without putting stress on the liver and kidneys. When taken internally, it acts like a sponge to grab toxins and take them out of the body. I have had clients tell me that clay has expelled parasites, cleared up skin issues, helped with speech and learning in children, and improved results of heavy metal toxicity tests. What could clay do for you?
Anyone ready to get muddy?
This is what I hear every day when my clients look at the end result of their ionic foot baths. How can that sludge possibly come out of your feet? Ionic foot baths charge the water with a current slightly stronger than and the opposite polarity of the lymphatic system’s fluid. It gently pulls clogged, toxic material from the vessels and nodes of your lymph system and gets things moving.
When my health was at its worst, my holistic physician told me that if I did nothing else, do ionic foot baths 3 times per week. This one simple tool can be quite helpful! I wasn’t sure I believed it could be so beneficial until I tried it for myself and my family. I could see changes start to take place in our behaviors, moods, and physical health within a week.
Since I started providing ionic foot baths to clients, I have noticed several things:
- Every person has different looking water at the end. Some have thicker water, darker water, different colors, more flecks, or more bubbles.
- Everyone’s water becomes less thick and less dark as they continue to receive sessions.
- When someone goes on a specific cleanse to rid the body of liver toxins, candida or heavy metals, I see very specific changes in the water that correlate with the type of cleanse they are doing.
- The better your diet and lifestyle, the more quickly the water will improve.
- Clients have told me that they experience better sleep, calmer and more joyful emotions, less chronic pain, balanced hormones, better bowel movements, better focus, and fewer colds and allergies.
It’s one of those things you really need to experience to understand the hype. It is a tool that I never want to be without, and I can tell when it’s time for me to have a session for myself. It only takes a half hour and it makes a real difference. Are you ready to try it?
