Back–ne? One way to get ready for summer

woman-918653_960_720Acne on your back can affect anyone, not just a teenager. This kind of acne is persistent and difficult to clear up. Now that summer is coming closer and sleeveless shirts are necessary, how do you ignore the back-ne?  Infrared sauna can make a big difference.

Most people I talk to don’t understand how different infrared sauna works as compared to other saunas. The infrared sauna causes your body to sweat from a deeper level.  This means the sweat you generate is not just a result of your body getting hot and needing to cool off.  The light waves from infrared are similar to the wavelengths of the sun. This means you feel great after the sauna, as if you went to the beach for the day and didn’t get sunburned. So many clients use the infrared sauna for stress management and there are studies available showing it is good for your heart as well.

Back to getting good results with conquering back-ne.  We have found that doing an infrared sauna session 3 times a week for 4 weeks can help your skin clear up and this also means you have made some headway on reducing your toxin levels–and stress as well. Pretty good for an easy, 30-minute relaxing sauna session!

Benefits of far infrared sauna include:

  1. Detox
  2. Relaxation, well-being
  3. Pain relief
  4. Weight release
  5. Improved circulation
  6. Skin purification

So, come on in and let’s get started!

Why Colon Hydrotherapy?

e-learning-1367416__180As a detox specialist, I am often asked the question, “What do you think of colonics?” In the past my response was, “I am not sure,” or “An enema should be good enough.” Today, however, my response is much different as I have seen first-hand the benefits of colon hydrotherapy that one can NOT get from doing enemas alone. But, even after someone becomes educated about the benefits, there are obstacles to committing to make the first step.  First I want to address the “yuk” factor.  Most people want to be private about their own bowel movements!  I, in particular, like to be private, so I understand this concern. Another factor is anxiety; almost every new client who comes feels a bit self-conscious. The colon hydrotherapy experience is unfamiliar. This usually goes away after the first 5 minutes into the session, which lasts about 35 minutes.  Let’s face it- it feels good to poop!  So 35 minutes to fully eliminate waste matter really makes for a refreshing experience. So many people feel lighter and energized after receiving a colon hydrotherapy session.  At Nourishing Journey we have couples come in, women preparing for their weddings, or people who just want to feel better and try it out. I don’t want to forget to mention the folks who need help being regular or who are dealing with digestive issues like leaky gut syndrome or bloating.

What I have come to understand about the colon is it is like an accordion–as in polka music. This may help you to imagine how something about 5 ft. long could fit into a 100 lb. adult–the design is brilliant!  The small folds of the colon act like pockets, where healthy and unhealthy microbes can gather and populate. Meanwhile, as the stomach muscles play the accordion the stool and fiber pass through the center of the colon.  Daily waste, aided by the folds contracting and expanding and sometimes tooting, is passed down to the end of the tube to be eliminated.  So, can you see how old waste might linger in the folds and make friends with the microbes in the pockets? When the water from a colonic comes in, it swooshes around these pockets to flush out what the passing fiber in the colon doesn’t reach. This is a simplified description but I hope it helps you understand why irrigation of the colon is sooo beneficial, and while doing an enema is good for home care, it is not meant to replace colon hydrotherapy. By the way, for those of you who are squeamish about doing an enema, just come in for a colonic and you will get a deluxe treatment and leave the office lighter and refreshed-it’s easy!

Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy:

  1. Improves the effectiveness of the digestive process
  2. Maintains regularity and prevent constipation
  3. Increase energy
  4. Help maintain PH levels
  5. Increase absorption of vitamins and minerals
  6. Improves whole-body well-being
  7. Rehydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
  8. Release toxins
  9. Improve skin

Cornered by Cravings? Three Possible Causes

CakeWe’ve all been there. We’re working away at our desk; happily ticking boxes off our to-do lists, when suddenly it hits us – Must. Have. Chocolate. Without warning, our previously-composed day goes out the window, and our thoughts are nearly completely consumed by the vending machine down the hall. We’re better than this, we think to ourselves, we can ignore this! But once a craving hits, our willpower army is seemingly disarmed, and we so often see no option but to give in.

But where do these cravings come from, and is there any way out from under their spell? Here are three possible causes for why we get cornered by cravings:

1.   Wishing for Water
Our tissues are up to 75% water, so it’s no surprise that dehydration can bring on many strange body signals. Thirst will often manifest as hunger and cravings, so that need for nachos might just be your body’s way of begging you to take a sip. Or two. Or ten.

2.   Mining for Minerals
Craving dark chocolate? You could be lacking adequate levels of magnesium. Jonesin’ for sugary snacks? The culprit could be chromium. Oftentimes, specific food cravings are just our brain’s way of sending a message we’ll find difficult to ignore. And while giving into the temptation may feel good in the short term, adding more mineral-rich whole foods to your diet will have a more lasting effect.

3.   Ain’t that Swell(ing)
Ouch! Not just for sprained ankles and arthritis sufferers, inflammation can take many forms in the body; even manifesting as digestive issues, moodiness, binge eating, and yes, food cravings. Reducing your intake of pro-inflammatory, acid-forming foods such as sugar and refined grains can go a long way towards ridding you of those pesky cravings for good!

Studies have also linked food cravings to fluctuations within our stress hormones, neurotransmitters or personal microbiome (our gut bacteria).

Regardless of your specific craving patterns, there’s likely a physiological reason behind it; and as such, a way to conquer them once and for all!

On the Brighter Side

daisyDo you know someone who always seems to look at the bright side of life? If so, chances are that this person is a positive thinker. And recent research indicates that such people are healthier, less stressed, better able to cope in times of adversity and generally happier than those who aren’t positive thinkers.

Positive thinking is a mental attitude in which you choose to focus on the possibility of good outcomes, using your energy to act in ways that are more likely to make those outcomes occur. And when bad things happen, the positive thinker typically takes action to resolve the problem instead of giving up hope. In this way, the positive thinker learns to believe in his/her own abilities to effect change, increasing self-esteem.

How can we become positive thinkers? We can simply choose to engage in positive thinking from now on. But those of us who have been in the habit of negative thinking will need a little help. One thing that can help is to spend more time with positive thinkers. Another way is to subscribe to a publication that presents you with ways of thinking more positively. One such publication is my monthly e-newsletter, The Leaflet.

As a life coach, my goal is to improve my clients’ quality of life. So it’s no surprise that the focus of The Leaflet is on positive thinking and growth. Each issue contains articles, tips, quotes and reminders to help you appreciate who you are and help you be all you can be. Your Plan, Your Life

Change is an inevitable part of life. But unlike the rest of nature, we humans can lose momentum and get stuck. Sometimes our vision of the future is not clear enough to motivate us. And sometimes we get so comfortable where we are that we don’t want to risk a change. But sooner or later we become so aware that we need a change that we become dissatisfied with the way things are, even though we feel helpless to make that change.

That’s where a good plan can help get you started! I’m talking about the kind of plan that includes a list of actions that you commit to with dates when you need to complete those actions. A good plan will start with a concrete objective so you know for sure that completion of the plan will bring you what you‘re looking for. The plan will take into account any obstacles that you might encounter and will be flexible enough to work around them. It will allow ample time for preparation and contemplation. And a good plan will arrange the actions so they can be completed by the time you want to experience the end result.

Some of us have difficulty generating these plans that are so vital to us. And even if we are good at planning, we sometimes need help following through with the plan. That’s where a good life coach can make all the difference. With the use of skilled listening, perceptive observation and insightful questions, a life coach can help you identify where you want to go and how you want to get there. She will give you carefully designed feedback to increase your motivation and confidence. And she will hold you accountable to the actions you have committed to.

We cannot rely on luck itself to arrange our future to our liking. Dissatisfaction is your cue that it’s time to take action and begin to create for yourself the life you want to lead. So go ahead and get started on your plan! If you’re not sure where to start, contact me and we’ll get things rolling. There’s no time like the present!
